Transport of agro-industrial products in rural areas, a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) in Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil

Montoya G.1,3, Segarra S.2, Pinto J.3, Pinzon P. 1 and Fontes Lima Jr. O.3

In Latin America and Caribe LAC, one of the key pillars is the production and transportation of cargo in rural areas, which are closely linked to the goods of the public sector. However, the lack of road infrastructure and maintenance issues are some of the current problems hindering the development of these regions. It is indicated that road infrastructure is inaccessible to approximately 40% of the rural population in LAC (IDB, 2022). This article analyzes the challenges affecting agro-industrial logistics and distribution in rural areas based on a qualitative comparative analysis, and finally, it presents opportunities for the development of the agro-industrial market in Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia. In conclusion, the main obstacles are the need for road infrastructure, an inadequate logistics and distribution system, a shortage of talent in logistics and distribution, and the high distribution cost (long supply chain), which restrict rural logistics development and increase logistic costs. To enhance and promote the development of agro-industrial trade in rural areas, it is suggested to improve public policies, technologies, invest in and enhance the road network, upgrade rural logistics and distribution facilities, implement traceability and measurement throughout the production chain, and integrate urban and rural bidirectional logistics.

This article highlights a critical yet often overlooked issue in rural development across Latin America and the Caribbean. The lack of road infrastructure and efficient logistics not only hinders agro-industrial growth but also deepens regional inequality. Improving rural connectivity and investing in logistics systems—alongside targeted public policies—are essential steps toward unlocking the economic potential of these areas. It's encouraging to see a focus on integrated solutions like traceability, tech adoption, and urban-rural logistics alignment. Hopefully, governments and private sectors can act on these insights to create more inclusive supply chains.
